How do we design infrastructure for all?

The latest episode of the Beyond Brunel podcast talks about inclusive design and its importance to infrastructure in the South West region.

Beyond Brunel host, Christopher Ackland is joined by Steve Maslin, Associate, Technical Authority for Inclusive Design, AtkinsRéalis, and Pam Turton, Head of Transport Strategy, Sustainable Communities, Bath & North East Somerset Council, to explore how we can create communities that are safe, functional, and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or circumstance.

Understanding inclusive design

Inclusive design transcends the traditional notion of accessibility.

As Steve Maslin explained in the podcast, while accessibility often focuses on the needs of specific groups who face barriers, inclusive design aims to create environments that are beneficial for everyone.

By acknowledging and addressing the varying needs and challenges faced by different community members, inclusive design seeks to foster environments that are welcoming and usable for all.

Steve Maslin told Beyond Brunel:

“Traditionally accessibility has been associated with a particular group of people who would otherwise face barriers and exclusions, whereas inclusive design is essentially designing for everybody.”

The role of the community

Pam Turton emphasised the necessity of engaging with communities throughout the design process as not merely a procedural step but a foundational aspect.

Co-design, where community members collaborate with design experts, is crucial for understanding the unique challenges faced by different groups.

Pam pointed out that this engagement should not end once a project is completed and “closing the loop” – seeking feedback post-implementation – is vital for continuous improvement:

“We need to understand how people feel about the changes that have been implemented and whether or not they’re actually doing what we initially thought they would…we can’t just deliver something and then never see the community again.”
